Who Invented the Camera?
In today’s era of technology, we have numerous devices to support our routine tasks. Digitalization has changed everything starting from communication to doing business in various fields. When it comes to modern technology devices, how can we forget about the digital camera? Did you ever wonder who invented the camera? If you are curious to know more about the history of the camera, then this post is worth a bookmark for you. Let’s collect the details now!
History of the Camera
We all love to capture photos from our smartphones and digital cameras. Gone are the days when we have to keep a big bag to store the camera. We have smartphones that do all the work for us in compact-sized devices. If we talk about the early days of the camera, cameras were occupying the entire room in the initial stage.
The camera was invented not by only one person, but the invention of the camera involves multiple people which is the reason why it’s a bit more complicated to answer the question, who invented the camera? You will be amazed to see the revolutionary evolution of the camera with multiple names who invented different technologies until the era of digital photography of the present time.
According to different sources and booklets, the first camera was invented by Johann Jahn in 1685. However, the progress was not made for another 130 years. In the year 1814, Joseph Nicephore Niepce clicked the first photograph which made him the co-inventor of the first camera.
The invention of the camera: Timeline
Interestingly, Joseph took the first photograph using his camera. Unfortunately, the photo was not stored permanently. After 10 years in 1829, Louis Daquerre made the first steps into practical photography with new technology and different methods. Daquerre togehter with Nicephore worked hard for the next few years to make the device more user-friendly.
After that, the original rights were sold to the French Government. Soon, the French Government started developing Daquerre Studios in various parts across the country. Until now, all the photographs would fade away after some time.
Alexander Walcott was the first person who invented the camera with the ability to capture the photo that doesn’t fade away. After the invention of this camera, more people joined the development process of a more advanced camera. Blurred photos, colored photos, negatives, and then small-sized cameras got invented by various engineers.
Henry Fox Tablot in 1841 invented the new camera with the ability to take multiple positives with a single negative. In 1889, George Eastman invented a flexible film roll with which a user can take multiple photos on a single roll.
In 1940, the era of photography begun with multiple cameras and high demand from consumers. This was the beginning of the era of color photography using the more advanced camera.
Different Technologies of the camera
What’s surprising here is all of these inventors invented new technologies in their cameras. If we talk about the technologies used by these inventors, we have had Pinhole Cameras in the 11th century, Photographic camera in the 18th century, Daguerreotypes and Calotypes camera, Dry plates, Film Camera, 35mm Camera, TLRs and SLRs, Instant Cameras with Automation, Digital Cameras and now, Phone Cameras.
The engineers of Kodak invented the camera of taking digital images in the year 1975. Talking about the present time, we have digital cameras also known as DSLRs for taking digital photographs that can be stored on your computer, laptop, smartphone, and other storage devices.
After that, many companies started working on developing their digital cameras to attract new consumers. We have high competition in the market and fortunately, we have so many popular and world-class brands with a range of all types of cameras for both casual users and professional photographers.
